With a new season comes a new craving for fresh, healthy foods. We’ve got some great springtime snack ideas, and bonus—they’re foods that help with muscle cramps, too! Plus, they’re portable and require little prep.
- Sliced Melons
One of the most common causes of charley horses is dehydration. All varieties of melons contain a ton of water and the nutrients potassium and magnesium, which can help keep muscle cramps away. Simply pick your favorite kind, slice, pack and go. - Dried Apricots
Dried apricots make a great springtime snack, and just one cup delivers one-third of your recommended daily potassium intake. Just make sure you buy unsweetened so you’re not loading up on sugar, which can worsen muscle cramps. - Yogurt
This yummy, light snack contains between 350 and 500 mg of potassium per cup, depending on the type. We recommend you buy plain yogurt and add your own fresh toppings. Try sliced bananas and your favorite nuts for a nutrient-rich treat! - Assorted Nuts & Seeds
Nuts and seeds are great sources of magnesium, according to WebMD. For example, 1 ounce of roasted, salted almonds has more than 70 mg of magnesium. One ounce of toasted sunflower seeds has about half of that, but you can mix them with other seeds and nuts for added benefits. - Avocados
Avocados are last on our list, but certainly not least. They just require a bit more creativity than the previous snack ideas (unless you like to eat them plain). Avocados can be added to meals like salads, soups and Mexican dishes. They also make a delicious, heart-healthy spread for sandwiches (try them in place of mayo). Oh, and they contain a whopping 30 percent of your daily potassium value.
