Ah, summertime. Sunshine, BBQs, vacations… and wrestling with the sheets?! There are many things to love about summer. Sweating while you’re sleeping is not one of them. For starters, it’s uncomfortable! What’s more, it can lead to lack of sleep, and not getting enough sleep can have a negative impact on your health.

So How Do You Beat the Heat for Better Zzzs?

Sleep experts recommend keeping the thermostat between 60 and 67 degrees for optimal sleep. For some, this may be a practical way to ensure a good night’s sleep. But for others, keeping the room this cool may not be realistic. Perhaps you don’t have air conditioning. Maybe you need to keep the thermostat a little higher for cost reasons. Or maybe you have a partner who has a very different idea of what a comfortable sleeping temp is!

Rest assured, the following tips can help you keep your cool during unbearable summer nights:

    1. Keep the shades closed during the day.

This will help prevent the sun’s powerful rays from creating a sauna-like environment in your home.

    2. Avoid using the stove or oven.

The heat generated from cooking can make a significant difference in the temperature of your home. Try to make simple no-cook meals when it’s too darn hot to cook.

    3. Bring your body temp down before bed.

Take a cool shower, and place cold rags on your neck and wrists.

    4. Keep a cool head and cold feet.

Try using a bamboo or other type of cooling pillow. And this might sound a bit unpleasant, but dipping your feet in ice water before bed can help you stay cool for a while!

    5. Run your ceiling fan in the proper direction.

If you have a ceiling fan, be sure to run it counter-clockwise on high speed. It will have a wind-chill effect.

    6. Get a good cross-breeze going.

Run a fan across from an open window. The outside air and the fan will combine to create a cooling cross breeze.

    7. Check your bedding.

Are you using satin, silk or polyester sheets and pillowcases? If so, swap them out for lightweight cotton.

    8. Pick your PJs wisely.

Try pajamas made from wicking material, which pulls moisture away from the skin. If you don’t want to buy new pajamas, you might already have fitness clothes that have the same effect.

    9. Make a DIY air conditioner and mister.

Create cold air and a cooling mist by running a fan in front of a bowl of ice.

    10. Switch rooms.

If you live in a two-story home and your bedroom is upstairs, consider sleeping downstairs since heat rises. Got a basement? Even better!
